Slack
Ask your Digital Twin — or a colleague's — directly in Slack, without switching apps.
What This Does
The Digital Twin Slack app lets you query twins from the channels and DMs where you already work. Mention a colleague who has a Digital Twin, @mention the Digital Twin bot, or message it directly — and get grounded answers with citations in-thread.
This page covers using personal twins in Slack. To publish an Expert Twin to a channel as a team assistant, see Creating a Slackbot.
Before You Start
- Slack must be connected for your organization — your admin configures the workspace-level Slack integration. If Slack isn't set up, ask your admin to connect it under Admin Console → Data Sources → Slack.
- You need a Digital Twin account provisioned in the same organization as your Slack workspace.
- The Digital Twin Slack app must be installed in your workspace (see below).
Install the Digital Twin Slack App
- In Digital Twin, go to Twin Settings → Apps and find Slack (or Slack Auto Responder under Use Twin in External Apps on the Use Digital Twin Anywhere page).
- Click Connect (or toggle Auto-respond on the Slack app card) to start the Slack install flow.
- Approve the install in Slack for your workspace.
- Once installed, the Digital Twin bot is available for @mentions and DMs.
Installing the app is a one-time step per Slack workspace. After it's installed, individual users can query twins without reinstalling.
How to Use Your Twin in Slack
@mention a colleague's twin
In any channel or thread where the Digital Twin app is present, @mention a colleague who has a Digital Twin and ask your question:
@alice What was the decision on the API versioning approach?
The bot routes the question to Alice's twin and replies in the thread. Access rules still apply — you can only query twins you have permission to use.
@mention the Digital Twin bot
@mention @DigitalTwin with your question. The bot queries the most relevant twin for the context — typically your own twin, or a Custom/Expert Twin linked to the channel.
@DigitalTwin What are my open action items from this week?
While the twin is thinking, the app adds an 👀 reaction to your message.
Send a direct message
Open a DM with the Digital Twin app and ask your question directly. In DMs you can @mention colleagues to query their twins, or ask about your own work without any @mention.
Expert and Custom Twins in channels
When an admin or Expert owner links a Custom/Expert Twin to a channel, the bot can also respond proactively to questions that match the Expert's knowledge — without an @mention. See Creating a Slackbot for that setup.
Enable Instant Responses for Your Twin
To let colleagues @mention your twin and get instant in-thread replies, opt in to the Slack auto-responder:
- When someone first @mentions your twin, the bot may offer a button to enable instant responses.
- You can also enable this from your twin's configuration in Digital Twin.
Once enabled, teammates who @mention you get answers from your twin directly in Slack. You control whether your twin responds this way.
Your admin can enable or restrict auto-responder behavior per channel under Admin Console → Data Sources → Slack → Autoresponder Settings. If auto-responses aren't firing in a channel, check with your admin whether that channel is allowed.
Tips
- Ask full questions. Very short messages (under the minimum length) are ignored by the bot.
- Use threads. Responses are posted in-thread on your original message so channels stay readable.
- Check access. If you see an authorization error, you may not have permission to query that person's twin.
- Provisioned accounts only. Your Slack email must match a provisioned Digital Twin user in the same org.
Troubleshooting
The bot doesn't respond
- Confirm the Digital Twin Slack app is installed in your workspace.
- Make sure you're @mentioning the bot or a colleague with a Digital Twin — casual channel messages without a mention are only answered when a linked Expert Twin's auto-responder is active.
- Check that your question is long enough and looks like a real question.
- Verify your Slack account is provisioned in Digital Twin (same email domain/org).
I can't install the Slack app
Ask your admin to confirm the Slack data source is configured and that the external Slack app feature is enabled for your organization.
Auto-responder isn't working in a channel
- Confirm an Expert Twin is linked and published to that channel (for proactive responses).
- Ask your admin whether auto-responder is enabled for that channel.
- Try an explicit @mention of @DigitalTwin first to confirm the app is working.
